BSOTS 044 - make mine funky soul...
Now Playing: the hum of the computer and the birds outside my window...
Topic: my podcasts

funkiest bsots episode ever. i truly believe that. the great thing about is...it's all podsafe. all from the podsafe music network and ioda promonet, which means that good, quality soul and funk is within reach for the podcasters and bloggers worldwide. that does my heart good.

i play a cut from the late mr. ray barretto. ever hear urban dance squad's "deeper shade of soul"? it was ray barretto's tune of the same name that uds sampled for their hit song. soul from the u.s.a. and the u.k., funk from cuba, nigeria, italy, and amsterdam...i'm really proud of this one. and when you have this much funk and soul in one show, surely the presence of the Godfather can be felt nearby. listen for his living legacy within this episode.

oh yeah, i screwed up a band name the first time i said it. it's JUICEBOX, not "jukebox." and i'm half joking when i call myself "the podsafe soul and funk ambassador", but somebody's gotta play the role. why not me?

as always, if you dig this show, please digg this show. in the immortal words of frankie crocker, "if you don't dig it, you KNOW you gotta hole in yo' soul..."

BSOTS 043 - be so clear...
Now Playing: solipsistic nation - episode no. 44
Topic: my podcasts

got some big songs on this show and some big special guest appearances on tunes to boot. as ed sullivan would say, "really big showwwwwwwww..." music's coming in from all over the place for this episode. a pair of songs from promonet, a pair from the podsafe music network, yet another pair from foundation media, and the closing tune from two sheps that pass (thanks, natalie!) also, feedback in the form of an audio comment (my first!) from none other than anji bee. totally made my day...

so a variety of sounds for your listening pleasure: hip-hop, drum and bass, global soul, and some deep-fried glitch. you know the routine, kids: if you dig this show, please digg this show. thanks much...

BSOTS 042 - label profile: bbe
Now Playing: a serious convo between my wife and i. other than that, silence...
Topic: my podcasts

rather annoyed that this one was posted so late, but i run a race against time on the daily and i'm always on the losing side. so what else is new?

so this show shines a spotlight on the BBE Records label. props to my man Eddie "Bladow!" Bezalel for hooking me up with a bunch of label releases a while back and gave me free reign on joints to play. in turn, i turned him on to the podsafe music network and a bunch of BBE joints ended up there soon after.

prepare yourself for some high quality hip-hop, house, and soul. as always, if you dig this show, please digg this show. thanks for the support...

BSOTS 041 - a tape of high fidelity...
Now Playing: interference on the baby monitor's channel...
Topic: my podcasts

i started recording this near the beginning of the month and here it is the 21st. if the next show squeezes in this month at all, it'll be a minor miracle. hopefully you'll think this one was worth the wait. i'm very happy with the selections chosen for this episode.

most of the music provided today is courtesy of ioda promonet. there's also a pair from the podsafe music network and a joint from thad reid courtesy of foundation media.

so there's hip-hop, funk, electronica, psychedelia, spoken word, and some dancefloor latin jazz to boot. not too shabby. if you dig this show, please digg this show. thank you...

some reading material for the weekend...

happy friday, all.

there are days when i wonder if Mark Anthony Neal is getting closer to Michael Eric Dyson status, a type of cultural critic and author that is both praised and cursed. regardless, he's still my man, and this article delves into what he believes are the real reasons for hip-hop being under attack as of late. btw, he's going to be writing for vibe.com starting next month, so look out for that...

speaking of hip-hop, Saul Williams recently wrote an open letter to Oprah Winfrey regarding her forum on rap music. eloquently and respectfully written, you may be able to find this on his myspace blog. if not, check here to read the letter in its entirety...

BSOTS 040 - blends session: say hey, say ho...
Now Playing: rockin' that episode myself right now... :-)
Topic: my podcasts

a little bit of electronics and a whole lotta hip-hop. another blends session for y'all. you know how we do...

music provided for today's episode by podsafe music network, ioda promonet, and foundation media. songs from butta verses and black attack are from a two-song single released by audio clutch/beats and rhymes. it's been a while since i played anything from african dope records, so juan thyme gets some love in the mix.

lots of flavor on this one - really hope you're feelin' it. speaking of which, if you dig this show, please digg this show. thank you...

some food for the brain...
Now Playing: polyrhythm addicts - it's my life (feat. phonte of little brother)
Topic: articles

it's hump day, and it's time to get your read on. let Bakari Kitwana's op-ed from New York Newsday serve as a final note regarding the Imus controversy - very well said and really breaks things down for those who want to know what's going on behind the scenes. and while you're in the zone, follow that up with Tracy Sharpley-Whiting's perspective on the sexual politics of hip-hop. i'm seriously considering a sit down with this woman's new book.

and then there's this. found it while hanging out on twitter courtesy of Jersey Todd. i hope it's real. it's terrible that i have to be skeptical of something like this...
