BSOTS 109 - Looking Ahead...
Now Playing: friday favecast - the love hard(er) episode...
Topic: my podcasts

For the first time in BSOTS history, a new year has started without an episode posted in January. Forgive me if I don't shed a tear, but the first three minutes of this episode will give you some idea of how I've been feeling lately regarding podcasting and all things new media.

This show dives into the selections that I've been finding over at Ahead PR, an incredible resource for quality music. Things get started with a chill downtempo cut from Michael DeVellis and quirky glitch electronics from Meienberg. J57 brings the tough punch with some instrumental hip-hop, which slides nicely into Burton L's "Feel The Love" from a great compilation on the Revolutionary Music label. Julie Crochetiere belts out a tune from her Steady Ground album coming out in March while Ammoye and Rise Ashen join forces for a head-nodding dancehall/hip-hop hybrid. Shareholder Tom comes through with some killer afrobeat from his upcoming album as well. Paul Mac Innes is featured on the show for a second time, but this cut comes from a full-length released back in 2007 as a Japan-only album on P-Vine. Thankfully, it was released worldwide a year later. Right after that, Benfay drops a bonafide found sound banger.

I think Ahead PR came into my life just so that I could be reminded to play more house music on the show. For the first two or three months, I kept coming across some lovely house artists, such as Jaidene Veda. Her Pieces Pendulum album is worth every penny and "Sunday" is just one example of the ocean floor deep treats that await you. Two older cuts from the Third Ear label follow Ms. Veda courtesy of Wbeeza and Roland Schwarz, respectively. (Apologies to Mr. Schwarz: I foolishly forgot to mention him in my recap towards the end of the show.) Lighterthief's "Falling Into The Future" comes from the Apehouse label, founded by Andy Partridge of XTC fame. Andy also provides lead vocals for this song.

Ahead PR was also my introduction to my favorite label of 2010: Tokyo Dawn Records, responsible for "Dirty soulclaps since 1997," as their slogan boasts on their website. Georgia Anne Muldrow's version of "Roses" was featured on their compilation The Heart that dropped last year. Back in 2009, they released Comfort Fit's Polyshufflez album. "Fuh Real" is one of the standout tunes from that album. Tamara Wellons is responsible for the gorgeous cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Andy Compton of The Rurals put out his debut solo album last year and "As Sweet As Love" is its closer. I absolutely love the saxophone solo on this one.

In addition to running the Stilnovo label and spinning DJ sets in various locales, Eleonora Cutaia is the founder of Ahead PR. At last year's end, she shared her remix of Dezaray Dawn's "Chameleon" through the service and it's available as a free download via Bandcamp (please see tracklisting below). That song concludes the episode along with "City of God" by Andrea Guzzoletti. It's a wonderful piece from his Invisible Cities album, dedicated to the memory of Hector Zazou. I consider Ahead PR to be the new sonic dope supplier around these parts and you will definitely hear more from artists and labels who are receiving promotional support through this service. Here's hoping that you enjoy the show...
