BSOTS 104 - Perpetual Catch-Up...
Now Playing: the disbelief of being up so late and not feeling that tired, either. or am i?
Topic: my podcasts

Between freaking out over chatty voiceovers, RSS feeds imploding into themselves, and the usual workday complaints, this show felt like more of a beast to put together than it should have. Even so, I think it's a killer playlist this time around and the more I hear it, the more I dig it. Certainly hope that you feel the same when all is said and done.

Things kick off with the latest from Shawn Lee before settling into a nice midtempo strut with Hint remixing Flevans. Dego & Akwasi turn in a lovely remix of Ty's "Emotions" and I get to rep for the Budabeats netlabel again (hadn't played anything from them in a while) with a serious mover from Klitbeats. The cut from The Carps comes courtesy of Afro- Punk Vol. 2 and definitely wins for the best song title for this episode, hands down.

I tried to hold off on playing Jed and Lucia, but "The Park" has become a constant rewind tune for me in a very short period of time. I finally start rocking some tunes from Cyber PR and give Luke Parkin some star time, then follow up with my brother that's been down with Camp Lo-Fi from day one, The Hired Gun. The Funk League keeps the shoulders rocking with "The Boogie Down Bombers," featuring live lyrics from Diamond D and Sadat X. The Cross Country Collective (C3) adds a little "contempojazzsoulhop" to the mix before Mark Ronson throws down the gauntlet with "Bang Bang Bang." Both Q-Tip and MNDR sound great on this and it's one of my absolute favorite songs right now.

Set no. 3 begins with new material from Christopher Willits, sun-drenched experimental electronics that make a path for Friends Or Whatever to click-clack upon. Special shout out to the good people at AheadPR: the cuts from Atjazz and Comfort Fit are courtesy of them. Consider AheadPR the new sonic dope supplier around these parts. Then there's the aptly titled "Heaven" by Matthew Larkin Cassell. Just think: if Madlib hadn't sampled this for that Madvillain remix album, we wouldn't have Cassell's Complete Works on Stones Throw right now. It's nice when the sample clearance thing actually turns out to be a win-win situation for all parties involved. Doesn't happen like that often.

Agape's "She Really Likes It" is another one of those songs on constant rewind in my MP3 player...so much fun. Things slow down after that with seductive selections from Washed Out, 7 Day Visa (Anji Bee's vocals are straight up sizzling on this one), and (gasp!) the Nu Shooz Orchestra, revisiting their biggest hit in a wonderfully mature fashion. We head on home with the S.S.O. Orchestra, a Belgian band that only made one album but managed to get lifted by Diamond D and Busta Rhymes for one song: "Faded Lady." God bless the crate diggers for sharing this one with the masses. And here's hoping that you share this show with the music fiends in your life. Regards and respect...

Justin K. Broadrick and Pale Sketches...
Now Playing: Pale Sketcher - Plans That Fade (Faded Dub)
Topic: music appreciation

Music fans familiar with Justin K. Broadrick tend to appreciate sounds on the darker and heavier side of things.  Some know Broadrick's name from his time spent in the band Godflesh.  Others know him from the distorted dub of Techno Animal (anybody remember their Brotherhood of the Bomb album?).  His latest work, however, is bound to throw fans for a loop.  Pale Sketcher came into creation as a result of songs birthed out of the Jesu project: songs which seemed out of place for its grinding wall of guitars philosophy.  For one thing, the music is predominantly machine-driven, giving the productions a different energy.  There's a darkness that's still present, but it's undercut with a hypnotic ambience.

Jesu: Pale Sketches Demixed will be released by Ghostly International on August 24, 2010.  Allow "Plans That Fade (Faded Dub)" to be the first of the "de-mixes" to prepare you for what's in store...

Macedonia on Mixcloud...
Now Playing: the fan on medium speed...
Topic: my podcasts

A good friend of mine has been wanting me to do this for a while, but I just started uploading podcast episodes to Mixcloud.  I am completely floored by the fact that you can now timestamp your shows so that everyone will know exactly what song they're listening to in the mix.  Excellent tool.

I will be posting some select BSOTS blends sessions there as well as Us & Us episodes.  My first for Motion Radio gets the whole thing started.  If you haven't heard it already, you can check it out below...

BSOTS 103 - BGB: Avoiding Explosions Within A Nuclear Summer...
Now Playing: Panacea - Corkscrew Gaps (EP)
Topic: my podcasts

I kept going back and forth with this episode. I didn't know whether it was going to be a mixtape type of show but with "buckwild" musical leanings, or if I would preserve the BGB format and keep the rants at the center. In the end, it's sort of this weird fusion of both. Talking is left to the rants, so it's not like I'm introducing songs or talking about the music at all. The show moves a lot faster, in my opinion. Besides, I figure the music is amazing enough to speak for itself, plus I could always express whatever thoughts I had about the songs here in the show notes.

While I save my rants for the "buckwild" shows, the music is still the main draw. I have ended many horrible days at work with M.I.A.'s "Born Free" and if I'm gonna give props to her, I have to show respect to the seminal electronic punk band, Suicide. "Born Free" samples liberally from Suicide's song, "Ghost Rider." Atari Teenage Riot's "Activate" is another one of those songs that helped me get the rage out. Interestingly enough, I play a song from CX Kidtronik right after "Activate" and it turns out that CX is the newest member of Atari Teenage Riot. Kidtronik's "School Sucks" is a song that I've always liked and speaks to the hopelessness some kids feel regarding their dealings with the public education system. It was only right to follow that one up with Rabbi Darkside's "Thank Hip Hop Remix," which features a number of MCs that are also educators (a number of whom I know personally). Very interesting backstory on why this song was created: you can find it at Rabbi Darkside's Bandcamp page.

My cop stop story (along with Richard Pryor's on-point commentary) seems rather timely in the midst of the verdict from the Oscar Grant trial. And considering that Independence Day just passed, I threw in a theory from the always irreverent and drop-dead funny Paul Mooney. While it might be just a hunch, he may just have a point. I've wanted to play Youngblood Brass Band's "Nuclear Summer" on this show for a while; it's the song that partially inspired this episode's title. Strangely enough, I had Jonny Sonic's "Decompressor" picked out for the show prior to knowing all of the lyrics. It was only after placing it into the show that I read the lyrics for the first time. He pretty much nailed my mental and emotional state as of late...so much so that it almost makes me uncomfortable because reading the lyrics was like looking into a mirror that put my soul on blast. Read the lyrics when you get a chance...100 percent real talk.

The show kicks off with a "Buckle Up" spot from the Ad Council, which was part of a campaign aimed directly at urban radio. I think some African-Americans got offended by it and all five spots were eventually pulled. They're all kind of twisted in a special way. Oh yeah, keep tabs on Homeboy Sandman, who provides the closing song for this episode. He's been getting love from Gilles Peterson recently on his World Wide show on BBC Radio 1. He even called for a rewind on one of Homeboy's cuts the first time he played it because he liked it so much, saying that the Sandman reminded him of Aceyalone from Freestyle Fellowship. Can't get a better ringing endorsement than that...

BSOTS 102 - Foundation Media Showcase (vol. 3)
Now Playing: various artists - outer spaces ep
Topic: my podcasts

The longer I do this show, the more I shy away from episodes focused around a single genre. However, Foundation Media's all about the hip-hop and I've been wanting to do another artist showcase for them for a while now. So this one gets served up blends session style: a hour-long continuous mix of new and older releases from their artist roster. As always, big ups to Lee and J.J. for providing some great selections to play. And respect due to my man Darrenkeith, who recently called this episode "The Podcast You Need on Your iPod...RIGHT NOW."

BSOTS 101 - Mr. Peabody Records and Marc Mac
Now Playing: Bill's Box of Sound episode #46
Topic: my podcasts

It's been a month since the centennial episode and we're quietly proud over here at Camp Lo-Fi, but the music remains our top priority. This time I'm stepping aside to let some master mixers do the body moving. First up is Mike Cole of Mr. Peabody Records, digging up some seriously underground disco rarities. Songs two through eight in the track list represent his set, but I'm thinking there may be one extra cut in there that goes unlisted.

After that, Marc Mac of 4Hero comes through with some soulful and jazzy drum and bass steppers. No track list for that one, unfortunately. I play a handful of tunes in between sets as well, but it's all about the mixes for this episode. Big shouts to Myriel at BBE Music for the hookup...

BSOTS 100 - the custserv chronicles (and other tales...)
Now Playing: listening to it right now, actually...
Topic: my podcasts

perhaps the image needs some explaining. a co-worker of mine received that picture from one of our customers who was waiting for a call back from one of our sales reps. considering my main rant for this show, it seemed all too appropriate.

it's the 100th episode and i think i've earned the right to get a little "buckwild," so that is exactly what we're doing for this one. it's an extended episode clocking in at 100 minutes, easily my longest yet. the content includes neck-snapping hip-hop, head-banging rock, spoken word from various wordsmiths, a sermon snippet from the rev. dr. martin luther king jr., the late, great michael jackson in his own words, my three-year old daughter covering a sasha fierce tune (complete with avant-garde noodling on her kitty keyboard), atari commercials, and a few of my own stories to share. i'm sure i should be more celebratory about all this, but i'm just glad i finally got this one done. and i am extremely thankful that you are taking the time to listen to it. oh yeah, that song before the show actually starts is "my white friends" by duece poppi. it's like a bad accident: you don't wanna look, but you do so anyway in spite of yourself. color me guilty as charged...

BSOTS 099 - "i want a decade of this..."
Now Playing: saturday morning programming on qubo courtesy of my daughter...
Topic: my podcasts

if there's one thing i've grown to resent more than anything, it's feeling like my energy is being squandered during the day when i am most alert on things that i don't care about. i can't tell you how many times i've fallen asleep at the computer trying to put this episode together because working on it has to wait until the work day is done. and by the time the work day is done, i have very little energy left. i have absolutely no idea when or how the paradigm shift will come, that event or series of events that will help move what i'm passionate about to the forefront, but i continue to be crazy enough to believe that it still is a possibility.

and in the meantime, i surround myself with sonic substance, with beats and rhymes that give life. as phonte recently stated in an episode of gordon gartrell radio, "if you're listening to bad music, it's your own f**kin' fault." the good stuff is out there in abundance, and hopefully this show will serve as irrefutable proof that 2010 has already kicked off not only a memorable year, but a great decade for music. we here at camp lo-fi agree wholeheartedly with the opening sentiments of brother herbie hancock: "music is the finest high around."

TWEET DEEZ NUTS.
Now Playing: silence in the living room after midnight...
Topic: rants de macedonia

a fellow podcaster and brother-in-Christ seemed to dig my thoughts recently and whenever that happens, i consider it a blessing.  in a moment of complete and total frustration, i took to twitter and left off a mini-rant.  before it's lost forever in the cyber-ether, i figured i'd better capture it for posterity on the blog:

Twitter has produced far too many mobile chin scratchers who think they have the perfect 140 characters to provide an antidote 4 yr stress.

don't confuse a person's thinking out loud "what do i do now?" moment for complaining. let them have that moment. it could be an AHA prelude

if a job/relationship/time in their life is painful, your downplaying someone else's pain in 140 characters won't make it any less painful.

not every moment is meant to be summed up in a Twitter or Facebook status. and i'm tired of those who think it is. TWEET DEEZ NUTS. </rant>

so where did this all come from?  a number of places.  the violent waves of anger i've been feeling for the past few months dealing with the impossible goals and deadlines of work, continually fighting a losing battle against time in so many aspects of my life, not having enough time for creative things because the 9 to 5 is the main thing.  i'm tired of feeling like i have to apologize because i no longer believe that "hey, at least you're working" is a legitimate response.  if what you do to learn a living feels like you're signing a premature death warrant, then you have a right to question whether or not that's truly living, no matter how bad the economy is.  there's a sea of "positive thinkers" out there who will tell you that you're the problem for being negative and that you're looking to put the blame at someone else's feet.  and these thinkers have come out in droves now that they have the ability to trivialize your struggle while on the go and in 140 characters or less.

I NO LONGER HAVE THE PATIENCE FOR ANY OF THEM.  i simply don't.

rants have been building up in me regarding my customer service gig and customers in general, the problem with living amongst microwave culture in an increasingly on-demand world, and other things that have been bugging me lately.  some of them will probably come out on episode #100.  it's been a long time since i've done a "buckwild" show for Radio BSOTS, but i'm long overdue.  some of it ought to be right here in blog form so i can shut the hell up during the podcast and just play the music.  but yeah...better to get it off my chest here than say something to the wrong person while on the job.  the gig ain't no fun, but neither is being unemployed.  i've been there before.

if you ever wonder what might happen if you actually met the client on the other end of that phone line and you're pretty sure that the first thing you'd do is throw a punch...that's a problem.  i'm just saying.  more later...

my first contribution to the cupid's hunt project occurred two years ago when this whole thing got started (major props to tgrundy and anewlis for their vision back in 2008). i ended up making a house and techno blends session dedicated to my wife. this year, i'm back with another continuous mix, except the first half is uptempo while the second half is downtempo. the first part contains some wonderful and soulful house from the likes of roy davis jr., julius papp, eric kupper, and even dutchmassive. i'm rather partial to the second half, which features new music from artists like si*sé and dj cam, plus i get to represent for a pair of brilliant producers from the just plain sounds camp: oh.bliv and just plain ant.

my open letter to beth was recorded on thursday, february 11, 2010 on my sansa clip player as i walked out of my work building and along the path to catch my train.  i'm writing this on the day before valentine's day. as of now, wifey has a terrible head cold and can't even smell the pair of roses that i got for her. poor thing.
