BSOTS 110 - Father-Daughter Dance (for Simone)
Now Playing: The Cure - "Harold And Joe"
Topic: my podcasts

This one's been a long time coming. And possibly the one to get me out of my podcast doldrums as of late. Very little has been of importance to me lately, but family has been major, particularly the time that I spend with Simone. This show is for her. It's full of songs that remind me of her, songs that sound like her smile, that sound like her thought process. This mix also contains selections that she's danced around to in our living room. And it contains slices of family life, too. This one might be the most important one I've done yet. Surprisingly enough, it's also been the least stressful in terms of stringing it together. I suppose thinking about it for the past two years helps.

This one's for Simone. This one's for my wife. And this one's for all the fathers raising up wonderful daughters and wanting to be present for every moment. If you know of a father who loves his daughter, please share this one with them. Enjoy...

BSOTS 109 - Looking Ahead...
Now Playing: friday favecast - the love hard(er) episode...
Topic: my podcasts

For the first time in BSOTS history, a new year has started without an episode posted in January. Forgive me if I don't shed a tear, but the first three minutes of this episode will give you some idea of how I've been feeling lately regarding podcasting and all things new media.

This show dives into the selections that I've been finding over at Ahead PR, an incredible resource for quality music. Things get started with a chill downtempo cut from Michael DeVellis and quirky glitch electronics from Meienberg. J57 brings the tough punch with some instrumental hip-hop, which slides nicely into Burton L's "Feel The Love" from a great compilation on the Revolutionary Music label. Julie Crochetiere belts out a tune from her Steady Ground album coming out in March while Ammoye and Rise Ashen join forces for a head-nodding dancehall/hip-hop hybrid. Shareholder Tom comes through with some killer afrobeat from his upcoming album as well. Paul Mac Innes is featured on the show for a second time, but this cut comes from a full-length released back in 2007 as a Japan-only album on P-Vine. Thankfully, it was released worldwide a year later. Right after that, Benfay drops a bonafide found sound banger.

I think Ahead PR came into my life just so that I could be reminded to play more house music on the show. For the first two or three months, I kept coming across some lovely house artists, such as Jaidene Veda. Her Pieces Pendulum album is worth every penny and "Sunday" is just one example of the ocean floor deep treats that await you. Two older cuts from the Third Ear label follow Ms. Veda courtesy of Wbeeza and Roland Schwarz, respectively. (Apologies to Mr. Schwarz: I foolishly forgot to mention him in my recap towards the end of the show.) Lighterthief's "Falling Into The Future" comes from the Apehouse label, founded by Andy Partridge of XTC fame. Andy also provides lead vocals for this song.

Ahead PR was also my introduction to my favorite label of 2010: Tokyo Dawn Records, responsible for "Dirty soulclaps since 1997," as their slogan boasts on their website. Georgia Anne Muldrow's version of "Roses" was featured on their compilation The Heart that dropped last year. Back in 2009, they released Comfort Fit's Polyshufflez album. "Fuh Real" is one of the standout tunes from that album. Tamara Wellons is responsible for the gorgeous cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Andy Compton of The Rurals put out his debut solo album last year and "As Sweet As Love" is its closer. I absolutely love the saxophone solo on this one.

In addition to running the Stilnovo label and spinning DJ sets in various locales, Eleonora Cutaia is the founder of Ahead PR. At last year's end, she shared her remix of Dezaray Dawn's "Chameleon" through the service and it's available as a free download via Bandcamp (please see tracklisting below). That song concludes the episode along with "City of God" by Andrea Guzzoletti. It's a wonderful piece from his Invisible Cities album, dedicated to the memory of Hector Zazou. I consider Ahead PR to be the new sonic dope supplier around these parts and you will definitely hear more from artists and labels who are receiving promotional support through this service. Here's hoping that you enjoy the show...

BSOTS 107 - BGB: The Return Of The Analog Brother...
Now Playing: miffy and friends on pbs kids...
Topic: my podcasts

The Thanksgiving holiday gave me the time that I needed to get this one done.  It's only been since August that the last "buckwild" show appeared through the BSOTS channel, but it feels like forever to me.  In that time, it has become apparent just how necessary this frustration release in audio form truly is.  Real talk: it's basically the difference between being hurting someone and not hurting someone, between being behind prison walls and being free to roam the earth.

People underestimate what people are capable of on a daily basis and that includes us underestimating ourselves.  I recently couldn't let go of the fact that a sanctimonious prick I deal with regularly by phone cut me off mid-sentence while I was trying to explain something to him.  Six hours later, I found myself having an extremely violent reaction to this just to get rid of the feeling I had.  It's that real.  Your whole perception of yourself can change drastically within the course of one workday: where your boundaries are, your idea of yourself at your worst, everything you thought you knew about yourself can be shaken to the core.

I fight for the time to create new episodes of this show because it's absolutely necessary.  The more time I do this is the less time I spend thinking about what I would like to do to certain people.  It's a mandatory process of allowing sonic bludgeoning to take the place of what could happen in the physical realm.  If you've never read Ephesians 4:26-27, just take a moment to do so.  It applies to this situation and it may apply to yours as well.  Just something to think about.  Enjoy the show...

BSOTS 106 - Ariel Publicity & Cyber PR Selections...
Now Playing: Vast Days - Beyondsphere
Topic: my podcasts

It is amazing how different one episode can sound from another, depending upon the podsafe resource that you gather material from. This show pulls selections from Ariel Publicity & Cyber PR. Maybe it's just me, but this one feels glossier, more spit-shine and polish than some previous episodes. Maybe it's the fact that this show is jam-packed with ID drops from the artists themselves. Maybe it's the inclusion of cuts like Mike Petrone's "Flaws," a cut that I can imagine hearing from mainstream media channels, but it was the honest lyrics that ultimately got to me. Or maybe it's the appearance of "Heat Or Paranoia," a song from a particular artist before making a name for himself on American Idol. I suspect that it's a little bit of each...

Special mix for Halloween at Phuture Frequency
Now Playing: my daughter watching dora the explorer in the background...
Topic: my podcasts

To anyone that's been waiting on the next episode of Radio BSOTS, I thank you for your patience more than I can even express.  Day job beatdowns have been relentless as of late, causing your camp counselor to crash at night...sometimes at the computer, sometimes before I can even get to the computer.

Perhaps it's those bouts with sleep and frustration with not getting more creative things done that have inspired this latest mix.  I was summoned by my man Guy over at Phuture Frequency to try my hand at putting together a mix for Halloween.  Somehow or another, I met the challenge and I'm grateful I did.  I'm really happy with how it turned out.

You can find the mix here and you like it, please retweet it or do the Facebook "like" thing as well.  Here's hoping your Halloween is both safe and fun.

And yes, BSOTS 106 coming SOON.  Promise...

BSOTS 104 - Perpetual Catch-Up...
Now Playing: the disbelief of being up so late and not feeling that tired, either. or am i?
Topic: my podcasts

Between freaking out over chatty voiceovers, RSS feeds imploding into themselves, and the usual workday complaints, this show felt like more of a beast to put together than it should have. Even so, I think it's a killer playlist this time around and the more I hear it, the more I dig it. Certainly hope that you feel the same when all is said and done.

Things kick off with the latest from Shawn Lee before settling into a nice midtempo strut with Hint remixing Flevans. Dego & Akwasi turn in a lovely remix of Ty's "Emotions" and I get to rep for the Budabeats netlabel again (hadn't played anything from them in a while) with a serious mover from Klitbeats. The cut from The Carps comes courtesy of Afro- Punk Vol. 2 and definitely wins for the best song title for this episode, hands down.

I tried to hold off on playing Jed and Lucia, but "The Park" has become a constant rewind tune for me in a very short period of time. I finally start rocking some tunes from Cyber PR and give Luke Parkin some star time, then follow up with my brother that's been down with Camp Lo-Fi from day one, The Hired Gun. The Funk League keeps the shoulders rocking with "The Boogie Down Bombers," featuring live lyrics from Diamond D and Sadat X. The Cross Country Collective (C3) adds a little "contempojazzsoulhop" to the mix before Mark Ronson throws down the gauntlet with "Bang Bang Bang." Both Q-Tip and MNDR sound great on this and it's one of my absolute favorite songs right now.

Set no. 3 begins with new material from Christopher Willits, sun-drenched experimental electronics that make a path for Friends Or Whatever to click-clack upon. Special shout out to the good people at AheadPR: the cuts from Atjazz and Comfort Fit are courtesy of them. Consider AheadPR the new sonic dope supplier around these parts. Then there's the aptly titled "Heaven" by Matthew Larkin Cassell. Just think: if Madlib hadn't sampled this for that Madvillain remix album, we wouldn't have Cassell's Complete Works on Stones Throw right now. It's nice when the sample clearance thing actually turns out to be a win-win situation for all parties involved. Doesn't happen like that often.

Agape's "She Really Likes It" is another one of those songs on constant rewind in my MP3 player...so much fun. Things slow down after that with seductive selections from Washed Out, 7 Day Visa (Anji Bee's vocals are straight up sizzling on this one), and (gasp!) the Nu Shooz Orchestra, revisiting their biggest hit in a wonderfully mature fashion. We head on home with the S.S.O. Orchestra, a Belgian band that only made one album but managed to get lifted by Diamond D and Busta Rhymes for one song: "Faded Lady." God bless the crate diggers for sharing this one with the masses. And here's hoping that you share this show with the music fiends in your life. Regards and respect...

Justin K. Broadrick and Pale Sketches...
Now Playing: Pale Sketcher - Plans That Fade (Faded Dub)
Topic: music appreciation

Music fans familiar with Justin K. Broadrick tend to appreciate sounds on the darker and heavier side of things.  Some know Broadrick's name from his time spent in the band Godflesh.  Others know him from the distorted dub of Techno Animal (anybody remember their Brotherhood of the Bomb album?).  His latest work, however, is bound to throw fans for a loop.  Pale Sketcher came into creation as a result of songs birthed out of the Jesu project: songs which seemed out of place for its grinding wall of guitars philosophy.  For one thing, the music is predominantly machine-driven, giving the productions a different energy.  There's a darkness that's still present, but it's undercut with a hypnotic ambience.

Jesu: Pale Sketches Demixed will be released by Ghostly International on August 24, 2010.  Allow "Plans That Fade (Faded Dub)" to be the first of the "de-mixes" to prepare you for what's in store...

Macedonia on Mixcloud...
Now Playing: the fan on medium speed...
Topic: my podcasts

A good friend of mine has been wanting me to do this for a while, but I just started uploading podcast episodes to Mixcloud.  I am completely floored by the fact that you can now timestamp your shows so that everyone will know exactly what song they're listening to in the mix.  Excellent tool.

I will be posting some select BSOTS blends sessions there as well as Us & Us episodes.  My first for Motion Radio gets the whole thing started.  If you haven't heard it already, you can check it out below...
