"blog for yourself..."
Now Playing: john morales - the m&m mixes

today i remembered why i love listening to media hacks:  the spontaneity of conversation and thought.  i just listened to episode #20 and it set off a bunch of thoughts in my head.  the seed was planted with episode #19.  heard that one while exercising and at one point, mitch joel talked about hearing others say to him, "i don't know who i should blog for."  to which he replied, "blog for yourself."

that really resonated with me.  i keep saying to myself that i don't have the time to write.  actually, i do.  the list of daily accomplishments needs to be a shorter list, a more realistic one.  jotting down a few thoughts every other day shouldn't be a goal that's out of reach.  i dig twitter, but the work day is too swamped to fire off those 140 characters like i did when i first came across it.  besides that, i was reminded by mitch and julien smith that a "tweet" is the data equivalent of a fart in the wind:  it's there for a period of time, but after that it disappears.  and once a tweet disappears, it's very difficult to find again.  blog entries, however, have staying power and are far easier to search.

prior to this entry, i wrote another music review for impose magazine and it felt good to stop stalling and just get it done.  and every week (or every other week), i've been posting a blog entry over at wfmu's free music archive.  been rather consistent with it, too.  basically, i need to force myself to go beyond the 140 characters and write.   but right now, a brother needs sleep...

BSOTS 093 - bugz in the attic, beats for your feet...
Now Playing: oh. bliv - rugged tranquility
Topic: my podcasts

it's not often that extended 90-minute shows happen around here, so when they do i make sure that i have a good excuse. this episode features the remix work of bugz in the attic and their got the bug 2 compilation. i found out while recording this show that the j. viewz cover of "smooth criminal" is also available on that compilation, not just the tru thoughts covers collection. there are a few selections from other artists here that i thought would complement the bugz material well. big shouts to myriel at bbe music for sending afronaught's promo mix my way.  hope you've got your dancing shoes on...

BSOTS 092 - reasons to look forward to fall...
Now Playing: the sound of my eyelids shutting...fade to black...
Topic: my podcasts

when i sat down to record voiceovers for this episode, it felt like i hadn't done them in months. felt out of practice and rather unnatural. of course, no one likes to hear their own voice, so i'm probably being harder on myself than i ought to be. but the worst was falling asleep in front of the computer while putting the show together...twice in a row. it's clear that i can't do late night editing sessions anymore, which is a shame because i don't have the time to do this in the mornings before work like i used to. a new day, a new challenge presented by my arch enemy named time. we're still in divorce court and she won't be satisfied until she's taken me for everything i own.

on the plus side, there are some pretty good selections featured within this episode. come for the free downloads, stay to drop some dough on a few cuts. for real, support these artists by buying their music. this way, they'll actually feel justified in making MORE music. and isn't that what we want?

BSOTS 091 - blend session: summer's farewell...
Now Playing: koushik - beep tape
Topic: my podcasts

hello, i'm macedonia. and yes, i'm still doting on summer. mainly because the american northeast didn't have much of one. june was a total washout - we got robbed. fall came a little too fast for me. truth be told, it always does. so i figured i'd put together an overdue blend session paying homage to my favorite time of year. lynchpin cuts are probably "days like these" by notes to self and "that day" by oddisee off of his odd summer e.p. check for cuts from karriem riggins, oh.bliv, just plain ant, funky dl, and many others. and had to give a nod towards the living legacy of mr. john rivas a.k.a. super rockin' mr. magic. sir juice always had my ear. hip-hop mixshows wouldn't be where they are today without him.

BSOTS 090 - BGB: this is not a game...
Now Playing: the sound of hunger and frustration. basically, i need to get myself some breakfast...
Topic: my podcasts

funny how my mood changed during the course of recording this show. all things considered, it's for the best. it made for a level-headed conclusion, which is something i normally don't associate with the "buckwild" shows, but these quarterly happenings are supposed to throw you for a loop. so, what's the happy haps for this one? some brash music, some silliness, some rants (as always) and a cover version of sorts from yours truly. don't say you haven't been warned.

to my man darrenkeith wyatt, did i mention your blog as "theocracy and technology" when i meant to say "theology and technology"?  if so, my sincere apologies about that.  if you've been going through it on your job, be sure to check his blog post listed below...

us and us for august 2009
Now Playing: new tracks from beatmonstas
Topic: my podcasts

i've uploaded this for motion radio, but i can't wait for it to actually premiere on their site before i share it with you.  the mix has been done for a few weeks now and it's finally online.  check all the particulars below...

us & us episode no. 11 - "sunrays and sound waves..."

within my brief period of spinning parties, clubs, and bars i discovered something about myself:  i am forever destined to be that side room selector.  even when i was in the main room, i still brought the side room cuts along for the ride to try out between the club bangers.  family life ultimately brought the gigs to a halt, but i know i'd be spinning side rooms if i was still out there.  that's where i always heard the more interesting or challenging selections - didn't matter what event i was at.  i think that this mix stems out of that love for the side room, whether it's mocky's take on isolee or the beautiful enigma that is arthur russell.  if us and us were an actual club monthly, i would demand that all 13 minutes of russell's "in the light of the miracle" be played each month at some point in the night.  to experience that song on the right sound system...impossible to resist.

it's the same way i feel about carl craig under his paperclip people moniker or luke vibert's disco turn as kerrier district.  other cuts of note include the instant sing-along goodness of samuel purdey, the sleek future soul of $tinkworx, the cuddly electronic warmth of capitol k, and towa tei as remixed by cornelius.  this mix represents the midtempo-uptempo side of things; we'll get downtempo with part 2 next month.  here's hoping you enjoy the "side action"...

download file {left-click to stream, right-click to download}

tracklisting:
1) aloe blacc - nascimento (birth): scene II
2) nuyorican soul feat. george benson - you can do it (baby) {bar beats}
3) rockers revenge feat. donnie calvin - walking on sunshine (acapella)
4) spymusic - cloak
5) isolee - it's about (mocky's it's about my shit remix)
6) arthur russell - in the light of the miracle
7) paperclip people - 4 my peepz (shot)
8) the adventures of daniel lite starring lorraine chambers - i want your love (underground vocal)
9) the allenko brotherhood ensemble (tony allen vs. off world ensemble) - dance of loa
10) kerrier district - disclix
11) psychedelic research lab - tarenah (chill mix)
12) herbie hancock - the essence (drumming)
13) samuel purdey - whatever i do
14) capitol k - pillow (wagon christ mix)
15) $tinkworx - todas las noches
16) towa tei - butterfly (cornelius remix)

BSOTS 089 - music (will outlast the) industry...
Now Playing: monica on wfmu...
Topic: my podcasts

lots of music to get to. and as my falling asleep in front of the computer for the umpteenth time suggests, time is not on my side. put it this way:  time and i are in divorce court...and time is kelis while i'm nas.  yeah, it's like that.  however, while i could sit there and complain about having a day gig that takes more from me than it gives back, i'm going to focus instead on what's more important: the music. hope you enjoy this one...

on the mind and on the agenda...
Topic: my podcasts

the day's winding down at the job and i'm rather restless at the moment.  patience has never been a strong point for me and it's becoming clear that if i want the desired life changes to occur, i will need to learn when to stay put and when to move.  this is definitely going to apply to the job situation above all else and clear direction is only going to come from GOD alone.

between this amazing podcast episode from c.c. chapman and a sermon from a guest preacher at my church, i've been thinking a lot about the limitations that i place upon myself and that i place upon GOD.  i've also been thinking about what habits or practices in my life need to be cut off, not just cut back.  it's been brought to my attention that failure to get self together will only result in moves that are lateral, circular, or backwards - not upwards.  i've got a lot of work to do.

in spite of this, the creative streak has been in full swing.  keeping up on weekly posts for the free music archive, including a mix on my blog available to stream.  working on the next bsots episode and there's an us & us mix for motion radio that's nearly done - just have to record an intro and outro for it.  august 2009 marks four years of my podcast.  my daughter simone turns 3 on the 23rd.  and next month, beth and i celebrate ten years of marriage on the 18th of september.  pretty wild.

with the four-year anniversary of the show comes the one-year anniversary for the "buckwild" episodes.  the first one doesn't sound half bad after 365 days.  if you missed it the first time around, check it out here...

BSOTS 088 - from sonic seduction to aural ascension...
Now Playing: nickel and dime radio with dj small change (wfmu.org)
Topic: my podcasts

this show was a long time in the making. i've wanted to play some of these songs for well over a year, but other sounds and episode concepts kept pushing them to the side. however, with the mental stress and strain that i've been experiencing lately between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., i think this is the perfect time to drop this one. i get the sense that many others are going through their own mental, emotional and spiritual wars. if that describes you, then this show is for you as well.

this feels like a vastly different show than the ones i usually put together, but it's one that i think fits well within the BSOTS channel. it's a number of hypnotic lock grooves and loop-driven pieces along with some highlife outta nigeria and electronic/african tribal hybrids. "yalayala" - i've been wanting to play this cut for y'all for a while now. i've been dancing down the street on the way home listening to this one - instant trance wherever i am. it's an honor to represent for liquid liquid: "lock groove" hones in on what they do so well. there's also a seductive downtempo moment from marcia blaine, funky minimalism from camp, a gorgeous christian walt remix of a laserlong tune, and one of my favorite compositions of all time from steve reich. i think this one's a keeper and i hope you do, too. may it provide the musical therapy you need to get you through the day.

p.s. screwed up the reading of the playlist slightly: marcia blaine comes before camp in the mix, not the other way around. by the way, if you're wondering what the short instrumental is in the beginning, that's "out west" by producer oh no. and no, it was never actually featured on a previous episode as the show's opening suggests. this could very well be a running joke for future episodes and an excuse to hit cats over the heads with short snippets from beat tapes or instrumental albums before getting the show started. we'll see if it stays...
