BSOTS 120 - Twenty Eleven Favorites, Obsessions, and Earworms (pt. one)
Now Playing: Fishbone - Live in Bordeaux
Topic: my podcasts

If it were already halfway through the year, maybe then I would feel uncomfortable about saying "Happy New Year." However, since we're not even done with the first month yet, I'm going to say it...

Happy New Year.

This year is already shaping up to be amazing musically, but forgive me if I'm still a little stuck on 2011. The amount of sonic spillover from last year could easily fill up this one. And there's always more that I know about, but never get a chance to hear. There's so much more that passes me by these days than I'm able to catch. Surprisingly enough, I'm okay with that. Probably because I know that I hear what I'm meant to hear. Music's cool like that.

No overly long intros. No needlessly extensive liner notes. Not this time. I believe in these artists, these albums, and these songs enough to simply let them speak for themselves.

Fifteen songs now, fifteen songs next episode. It's just a drop in the bucket from last year, but it represents the sounds that stayed with me the most. Hope you enjoy the show.

BSOTS 119 - BGB: As Far As It Depends On You...
Now Playing: Various Artists - Midnight Snacks
Topic: my podcasts

I'm sure that there are many who can look back at 2011 with fond memories and thankful memories. I am not one of those people. I am chomping at the bit for this year to be over.

It bothers me that I am 38 years old and can still find a myriad of things to scream "Screw This" about. The restlessness in my being feels like a guy in a straitjacket kicking at his four padded walls nonstop. I don't know much about a lot, but I know enough to believe that it can't be good to constantly be angry. Maybe that's why I haven't done more than one "buckwild" show prior to this one. At any rate, I need the release and perhaps you do, too.

There's a 25-minute mix that's dedicated to the out of work, the overworked, the "working poor," and anyone who's ever been harrassed by the cops about anything. There's Afrobeat, Swedish jazz fusion, global soul, angry hip-hop, even a little Fishbone in the mix. Should you need to let off a primal scream before 2011 comes to a close, let this show provide the soundtrack to your moment of much-needed catharsis. Happy New Year. All the best to you in 2012.

BSOTS 118 - Random Acts Of Musicology...
Now Playing: Kieran Hebden / Steve Reid / Mats Gustafsson
Topic: my podcasts

This episode is just another game of catch-up, featuring a bunch of artists and songs that I was listening to over the summer and some recent musical obsessions of mine. The Junk Culture cut I found through Promonet, which features the vocalist from Phantogram, so I was all over that. That's followed up by the lumberjack soul of Miles Bonny, the future flight of Union, and a new cut from Torae produced by Marco Polo. Hard to believe that this is coming from Torae's debut album; it seems like he's been in the game forever at this point. A pair of tunes from the unconventional hymnal follow after that, featuring the ill poetics of Propaganda and the biblical funk of Andrew Wartts and the Gospel Storytellers.

Hanna & Beatr8's "Flowers" has been on constant repeat for me and it's another example of how Sweden has been unfairly blessed with an ample amount of talent. Drunken Monkey's a new find for me and "July" takes me right back to the good vibes of summer. Vocalist Chrys-Anthony sounds amazing on this cut. Had to follow that up with the opener from Robin Hannibal's Bobby E.P. - he is an absolutely amazing producer. We pick up the pace after that with a classic from Quantic & Nickodemus, which was heavily featured in an iPod advertisement a few years back. Dotmatic piggybacks beautifully on the Quantic cut, which leads neatly into a Colman Brothers/Q-Tip mashup.

Billy Drease Williams brings back that feelgood hip-hop and the mood gets kicked up a few notches with the Pure P & Melo Remix of SoulParlor (with Oddisee in great form as usual on the mic). Producer K-Def gets hold of a De La Soul classic and the results are head nod whiplash-inducing. After that, it's time for a little boogie revival courtesy of Toro Y Moi and Breakbot turning in a fabulous remix of a Matthew Dear cut. Two real big obsessions for me over the summer were Jonti and Thundercat. Hopefully the cuts featured from both artists will serve as great reasons why.

The show closes out big with two artists that should be familiar to most who listen to this show. Jamiroquai uploaded "Smile" to his Soundcloud page about six months ago as a free download and it went pretty fast. Jay Kay really needs to stop teasing us and put out a new album already. Last but certainly not least, Jazzanova strolls through with expected beauty, a cut from their latest compilation entitled Coming Home. Had a lot of fun putting this one together and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did putting it together.

This episode features a mix from the First Lady of Beatdown, the one and only Lady Blacktronika. It's a hour-long set that should speak volumes to the house heads out there. Hypnotic and deep, much like her Future Blues album. Not much more to say than that.

BSOTS 116 - The Priority Shift.
Now Playing: random acts of musicology...
Topic: my podcasts

This might sound crazy to you, but I've been having this conversation with GOD about music and my place within it for almost a year now. (First time that I would have talked about any of this was on my tumblr blog.) I believe it's had a direct effect on the amount of shows that I have released this year through the BSOTS channel. I tried talking about this while recording voiceovers for the last "buckwild" episode, but after rambling on for almost 20 minutes, I knew no one would listen and I hadn't the foggiest notion of how I was going to edit that session down. It sat on a thumb drive for about a month before I revisited it. I suppose that it was time to do so: seems as if the music chosen for the show led me to picking just the right sound bites from that voiceover session.

As a result, this show is a strange mixture of my current musical obsessions and my constant drive towards finding out what my purpose is in life. I'm not certain if people will really get this show or not; all I know was that I had to do this one. It's part cinematic instrumentals, part slow motion house, part spoken word, part left-of-center hip-hop, part unconventional hymnal, and jazz and ambient selections as well. All this and my musings on GOD, music, and my attitude towards music at the end of last year that directly influenced my approach towards releasing new BSOTS episodes in 2011.

I hope all of this is presented in such a way that it makes sense to you. If not, feel free to let me know. Here's hoping that purpose has come around your way and made itself known to you. As for me, I'm still searching...

BSOTS 115 - In The Mix With South West Seven
Now Playing: Good Times (not the song from Chic, but the sitcom...)
Topic: my podcasts

In what will probably seem like a complete and total 180-degree turn from the unbridled chaos of the last episode, this show finds Camp Lo-Fi with its dancing shoes on, grooving to the sounds of Scope, one-half of DJ/production duo South West Seven. If you want to hear these tunes in an unmixed form, almost all of them are available at Beatport. Just check the buylinks below. We really ought to play more house music around these parts; Scope absolutely killed it. Respect due to Kahua Music for sending his mix our way.

BSOTS 114 - BGB: Go Out Swinging...
Now Playing: the anxiety in my head that only clogged toilets can bring...
Topic: my podcasts

Can't quite believe that this makes the first BSOTS GONE (buck)WILD episode of 2011, but here we are. I speak about being a "reluctant tech" as well as a curmudgeon. Other than that, I let the music scream for me. I think the show turned out better as a result. As for the sound bites of the NYPD clashing with partygoers outside of Tammany Hall, most of them come from an eyewitness video taken by Lady Jay Diamond. More videos along with photos and background information on the case can be found at the Monumental 5 Website.

The heat(wave) is on, kids. Keep a cool head as best you can...

BSOTS 113 - Camp Lo-Fi's Beatporium...
Now Playing: Friday Favecast - Swirl
Topic: my podcasts

First off, I have to thank Todd Kelley a.k.a. The Big La for being the main inspiration for this mix. If you've ever heard his Background Flow episodes via flowink.com, then you can understand why. I also gotta shout out Nikki of Infinite Ink, home of the Soulrific Podcast. Her seamless blends featured in every show make us all work harder.

I've been wanting to do an episode like this for at least a year, but what I'm learning is that you can't rush the arrangement of these shows. They're going to get made when they want to get made. Within the past month, I started stringing songs together while working on episode #111 and I couldn't stop. That's when I knew it was finally gonna happen. When the music starts to connect its own dots before your eyes and ears, you're on your way to putting together the next show. Lately I've been learning to listen to the music say to me, "Now's the time. What are you waiting for?" That's what it takes these days for me to do shows. Some weeks, I would much rather kick back and stream a documentary on Netflix. On other weeks, it's like a sonic obligation to get blends done.

There's a lot to take in musically within this episode. Some beats are constructed from samples, others are more spaced-out and synth driven. Some are short sketches that may feel like unfinished works to some, but still give you a good idea of what the beatmaker is capable of. Others are full-bodied, full fledged instrumentals. There's a lot of variety here, most of it released between 2009 and 2011, but Pete Rock's cut dates back to 2001 (and STILL kicks the pants off a lot of stuff coming out right now). Letherette, Maverick, and Shlohmo are all carried over from the previous show, and there are a couple of entries from the Just Plain Sounds camp. Cats like Damu The Fudgemunk and The Custodian of Records have that gritty and grimy feel to their work, a real love for samples and vinyl. Then you've got Mux Mool, representing the second wave of producers on the Ghostly International label, constantly coming up with head nod essential works.

I have come to the recent conclusion that Oddisee is absolutely unstoppable. It makes no sense how prolific he is and continuously dope while doing so. Presto is that dude who can never fail in my eyes...great producer. Make sure to keep tabs on Daru Jones and Dotmatic; both those cats have some serious skills crafting beats. And what else can you say about Dilla that hasn't already been said? The cut I include from him is an instrumental version of a Busta Rhymes joint he produced. I still miss him, as many of us do. But I've learned not to call the present-day beat generation a "post-Dilla" movement. It puts so much focus on James Yancey that there's a tendency to forget the immensely talented producers and beatmakers that still walk the earth. And while Dilla was here, he never failed to give props to those who were making great music because that's the kind of heart and spirit that he had. The least I can do is show love to those building upon the contributions that he gave to the art of hip-hop, soul, and music as a whole.

One last point: the song "Breakfast" by The Stuyvesants comes from their Brooklyn's Finest release, which celebrates its one-year anniversary this month. Further proof that the blends come together in their own time. This one's for the head nodders out there, the beat freaks, the emcees in the freestyle cipher going off on that one beat that always get them hyped. This is for those on some chill out stuff, just looking for something to kick back to. This is for all those who love listening to beat tapes and instrumental albums as much as I do.

We'll get "buckwild" next time around, but for now, welcome to Camp Lo-Fi's Beatporium. Hope you enjoy it...

Now when I say
Now Playing: the excitable voice of my daughter as we prepare to play together...
Topic: my podcasts

I am writing this on Memorial Day.  Just two more days and it will be the first of June.  How did five months of 2011 pass without a BSOTS GONE (buck)WILD show?  Sad, really.

That will change in the month of June.  First will be an all-instrumental edition of Radio BSOTS, focusing squarely on the beatmakers and hip-hop/electronic leaning producers.  After that, it's all about the "buckwild" experience.  For those who are unfamiliar with those shows, I set aside four shows a year where I can just go off the wall.  Musically, it's still about hip-hop, soul, funk, and electronic music, but I save the brash and freakier cuts for "buckwild" shows, as well as stuff that's more political and/or experimental in nature.  Aside from the music, you hear a lot more from me on those shows.  I tend to rant quite a bit.  The "buckwild" experience is actually a continuation of a show that I used to do called endless shouting matches with yourself.  It has long since podfaded into the sunset, but a few episodes are still up, for those that are curious.

In the meantime, if anyone feels the need to catch up on all things "buckwild" from the BSOTS channel, here are the episodes that have been released so far...

BSOTS 071 - BSOTS GONE (buck)WILD...
BSOTS 075 - BGB: rhythms and sounds from the nice part of town...
BSOTS 081 - BGB: as absurd as gourmet pork rinds...
BSOTS 086 - BGB: how i be...
BSOTS 090 - BGB: this is not a game...
BSOTS 100 - BGB: the custserv chronicles (and other tales...)
BSOTS 103 - BGB: Avoiding Explosions Within A Nuclear Summer...
BSOTS 107 - BGB: The Return of the Analog Brother...

The next BGB episode will be show #114.  Prepare yourselves...
