on the mind and on the agenda...
Topic: my podcasts

the day's winding down at the job and i'm rather restless at the moment.  patience has never been a strong point for me and it's becoming clear that if i want the desired life changes to occur, i will need to learn when to stay put and when to move.  this is definitely going to apply to the job situation above all else and clear direction is only going to come from GOD alone.

between this amazing podcast episode from c.c. chapman and a sermon from a guest preacher at my church, i've been thinking a lot about the limitations that i place upon myself and that i place upon GOD.  i've also been thinking about what habits or practices in my life need to be cut off, not just cut back.  it's been brought to my attention that failure to get self together will only result in moves that are lateral, circular, or backwards - not upwards.  i've got a lot of work to do.

in spite of this, the creative streak has been in full swing.  keeping up on weekly posts for the free music archive, including a mix on my blog available to stream.  working on the next bsots episode and there's an us & us mix for motion radio that's nearly done - just have to record an intro and outro for it.  august 2009 marks four years of my podcast.  my daughter simone turns 3 on the 23rd.  and next month, beth and i celebrate ten years of marriage on the 18th of september.  pretty wild.

with the four-year anniversary of the show comes the one-year anniversary for the "buckwild" episodes.  the first one doesn't sound half bad after 365 days.  if you missed it the first time around, check it out here...

BSOTS 088 - from sonic seduction to aural ascension...
Now Playing: nickel and dime radio with dj small change (wfmu.org)
Topic: my podcasts

this show was a long time in the making. i've wanted to play some of these songs for well over a year, but other sounds and episode concepts kept pushing them to the side. however, with the mental stress and strain that i've been experiencing lately between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., i think this is the perfect time to drop this one. i get the sense that many others are going through their own mental, emotional and spiritual wars. if that describes you, then this show is for you as well.

this feels like a vastly different show than the ones i usually put together, but it's one that i think fits well within the BSOTS channel. it's a number of hypnotic lock grooves and loop-driven pieces along with some highlife outta nigeria and electronic/african tribal hybrids. "yalayala" - i've been wanting to play this cut for y'all for a while now. i've been dancing down the street on the way home listening to this one - instant trance wherever i am. it's an honor to represent for liquid liquid: "lock groove" hones in on what they do so well. there's also a seductive downtempo moment from marcia blaine, funky minimalism from camp, a gorgeous christian walt remix of a laserlong tune, and one of my favorite compositions of all time from steve reich. i think this one's a keeper and i hope you do, too. may it provide the musical therapy you need to get you through the day.

p.s. screwed up the reading of the playlist slightly: marcia blaine comes before camp in the mix, not the other way around. by the way, if you're wondering what the short instrumental is in the beginning, that's "out west" by producer oh no. and no, it was never actually featured on a previous episode as the show's opening suggests. this could very well be a running joke for future episodes and an excuse to hit cats over the heads with short snippets from beat tapes or instrumental albums before getting the show started. we'll see if it stays...

Now Playing: the fan blowing on my back before i step out the door to face the day...

i was so out of it that i totally neglected to tell you about the free downloads in this episode. there are a number of them, make sure to grab those. also, apologies for screwing up the dj vadim song title: it's "you are yours," not "you are mine." outside of that, a good show with great music. hope this one provides a soundtrack to your summertime hangout happy haps...

BSOTS 086 - BGB: how i be...
Now Playing: v/a - summer bubblers vol. 2
Topic: my podcasts

this show would have been posted a week ago if it had not been for a blown motherboard on the home computer...two weeks after the warranty ran out. maximum suckage. thankfully, any and all data thought to be lost has been recovered, including this show.

i just listened to it again and i'm not nearly as anxious about it as i was 24 hours ago. i share a lot more of myself this time around through blog entries and poetry, the latter of which contains some rather nervous energy. i can't even recall the last time i recited poetry. beyond that, the music is bold, brash, and contains its share of polarizing figures. rye rye immediately comes to mind. you either like what she's doing or you don't. still, i think the different elements flow together nicely and it's good to have a quarterly shakeup around these parts. i'll admit that the BSOTS GONE (buck)WILD episodes are a bit of a trust game with the listener, but hopefully it's a fun one. feedback is always appreciated...

analog, digital, secular, spiritual...
Now Playing: the latin project sampler
Topic: my podcasts

uncertainties abound.  as an analog child living in a digital world, i find myself lamenting the death of the analog tv signal.  pixel clusters from the converter box suggest that perhaps a stronger antenna is needed.

just exactly how did we as a society allow so much of ourselves to be held captive by hard drives and cpus?  the moment our computers freeze or act in a way that they shouldn't, panic ensues.  just over a year old, the fairly new acer desktop in our home hasn't been itself lately.  is it a race against time to play the backup game, making sure that a brand new show doesn't get lost to digital whims, along with countless music files and pictures capturing year three of simone's life on earth?

when i say that i'm an old head forced to get into new media, i mean it.  there are certain aspects to podcasting, social media, and the digital life in general that i could do without, that i just look at and think to myself, there HAS to be an easier way.

so you turn the computer on, you hear the cooling fan turn on, power buttons light up, but it doesn't kick itself into startup mode.  don't see the acer logo, don't see the windows logo, just a blank monitor screen that's gone into standby.  hopefully the situation can be fixed and it won't cost an arm and a leg to do so.  more than that, hopefully the files can be saved.  yes i know, backup, backup, backup.  right now, our backup plan consists of remembering to put files onto CD-Rs.  with a toddler in the house, things like diapers, wipes, and clothes tend to trump an external hard drive in terms of importance.  but with the recent turn of events, it's clear that some terabyte space needs to be up in our humble abode with the quickness.

one step forward, two steps back.  some days, i feel like it's the story of my life.  or as i often say on my show, "makin' due..."

BSOTS 086 was all ready to go before this happened.  my work on the podcast normally gets done when wife and child are asleep or out of the house.  if i wait until everyone's asleep, i'm usually exhausted by then because the job sucks all life out of me.  prior to our computer being down, my wife become obsessed with this game on facebook and spent hours on it.  she's playing the game, i'm falling asleep while standing up in the kitchen washing dishes that i can never get ahead on and waiting my turn in the living room.  it'd be real easy for me to brand her a scapegoat right now, but it also wouldn't be right.  although she once thought that she caught a virus from a facebook app, we don't know what's causing the problem and pointing fingers won't help matters.

i think my biggest problem with all this is that i identify with podcasting to the point where i feel as if part of my identity has been taken away right now.  i resent the fact that most of my day is spent doing things that i have no desire doing to make a living.  and after those things are done and after household duties are taken care of for the evening, i have very little energy left for the things that i find fulfilling, if any.  meanwhile, there are others that can keep up their weekly habit of producing a show and they're getting thousands of downloads a month and they're up on their twitter/myspace/facebook/whatever else updates and their blog's all kick-ass beautiful and i feel like i'm barely hanging on with trying to produce two episodes a month.  and now that's currently hanging in limbo and i hate it.  and it makes me wonder why i've put so much of myself into this when the very tool that you need to create a podcast can suddenly turn against you.

i'll say it until i'm old and gray:  to err is human, to truly screw things up beyond reproach requires a computer.  now more than ever, i mess with the digital because i have to, not necessarily because i want to.  for all intents and purposes, i am and will remain an analog brother.

i existed before Radio BSOTS was a part of my life, i'll exist after it's done with.  not too long ago, i posted a facebook status which stated the following:

"Jason Smith is trying something new: placing meditation before music. In other words, emphasizing spending time with God (the Creator) as a higher priority before diving headfirst into beats, blips, rhymes, and notes (the creation). For the first time in my life, I'm becoming more comfortable with this much-needed switch in hierarchy..."

i'd be lying if i said i've been successful with this.  it was all good for about a week and music got real jealous.  truth is that music's been an idol with me for a long time.  i can always make time for music...and it's trumped my meditation time with God for longer than i can remember.  and i can't help but think that on some level, God's looking down on all of this and asking...

"NOW how much time do you have?"  i could be wrong, but it's just a feeling i get...

BSOTS 085 - artist profile: serengeti
Now Playing: the end result, which is pretty damn good, actually...
Topic: my podcasts

this episode marks the first time i've dedicated an entire show to one artist, but i believe that serengeti deserves the recognition. he's a emcee that comes at hip-hop from another angle entirely and i appreciate that. for me, he's just as important as a kool keith or even doom - he's somewhere in between those two, as far as i'm concerned. in some ways, he wears his heart on his sleeve, a testament to the raw emotion of some of his pieces. in this episode, you'll hear works from several of his solo albums as well as some collaborative works. i'm really happy that i get to share his work with you and i want to thank audio 8 recordings for allowing a pair of special permissions tracks on this show. special thanks to emile at nicepr promo for helping with those negotiations as well.

"'who out there smokes weed?' and 'where my bitches at?' decade of rap...and we still stuck on that." - serengeti, "mad whimsy"

BSOTS 084 - u dig?
Now Playing: touch sensitive - body stop
Topic: my podcasts

(photo taken by simone elizabeth smith, winter of 2009)

i need to apologize right off the bat: i do a bit of complaining about the j-o-b on this show. since i recorded this, i have been telling myself not to complain about that which so many don't have, including those i know personally. in addition, i have to start believing that what i do between the hours of nine to five DOES NOT DEFINE WHO I AM. it makes sense on paper, but it's harder to remember while you're in the trenches. i'll get there, folks, honestly i will.

on this episode, i encourage you (the listener) to become a digger, if you haven't already. whether you're dusty-fingered from digging through record crates or you're cyberspace surfing for the finest free and legal joints, we can all be diggers in some way, shape, or form. thanks to the internet, it's easier than ever. hopefully a show like Radio BSOTS will give you the incentive you need to continue the search for the perfect beat.

(just noticed this pregnant pause that appears right after the song by kriss and before i start speaking. what can i say? when you fight against time and sleep to put these episodes together, these things are liable to happen...)

new us and us episode for april...
Now Playing: notes to self - a shot in the dark
Topic: my podcasts

(picture above:  simone and i at her 2nd birthday party, willson's waves, mount vernon, ny - august 23, 2008)

another three months have gone by with no appearance from me on motion radio until now.  i'm back at it again with the us & us shows.  some really good cuts from the likes of k'naan, brothers and systems, shawn lee, and the long lost, with remixes of cuts from nat king cole and femi kuti.  definitely a mixed bag, make sure to check it out when you have the time.

music is therapy, and us & us represents a sacred space where i'm free to go anywhere in the music.  got a new dj-style mixer on the way to my humble abode, so you're liable to see more activity from me on the motion radio side of things.  stay tuned...

BSOTS 083 - sistersounds: the art of intuition...
Now Playing: speech debelle - speech therapy
Topic: my podcasts

every now and then, there's an artist that i can't get direct permission to play, but i still want to represent for them. i figured i ought to do it via youtube. and seeing as how this is an all-female episode, i really wanted to show my support for speech debelle, an artist based in south london. she has a new album, speech therapy, on the big dada label and the video above is for her second single, "the key." i love the song and think hers is a fresh voice that needs to be heard, particularly in terms of female representation in hip-hop.

it was important for me to really be on my podsafe grind with this one, so most of the music is from iodapromonet and the podsafe music network. the wendy and lisa song is courtesy of ariel publicity while the opening cut from amanda diva is a part of a free download ep on behalf of the artist. rather proud of the diversity in this one. hip-hop, soul, house, drum and bass, pop, and experimental works as well. here's hoping that you enjoy this episode.

what passes for april fool's jokes these days...
Now Playing: betty padgett - (self-titled)

okay, you're a sharp person, i trust you.  you'll be able to tell me if this is appropriate or not...

so it's april fool's day of 2009 and i'm dropping off simone at day care.  as i'm about to go, one of the attendees says, "jason, what is that bruise on simone's neck?  what happened to her?"

being the concerned parent that i am, i immediately check Simone's neck, to which the woman starts laughing and says, "APRIL FOOL!!"

i'm beyond shocked. i'm frozen with rage.  at one point, i think i muttered something to the effect of, "i'm sure in somebody's universe, that's funny."

then she says (still laughing), "now you have to get somebody."  to which i say while wearing an obviously forced smile, "it's probably a better idea if i don't."

so, appropriate or inappropriate?  if you're wrestling with this, let me remind you that a worker at a daycare center thought that they could joke about a bruise on a child...AT DAYCARE.

apparently, nothing says kneeslapper like perceived child abuse, be it real or imagined.  two days later, i'm still not laughing, but at least i don't want to smack her anymore.  until the next time that she says something stupid, which quite frankly could be any day now...
